AH Modifier Description: Clinical Psychologist
AH tells a payer the service came from a clinical psychologist. It is a discipline modifier rather than an education level, which is why a psychologist's claim can need AH, HP, or neither, depending on the payer.
Short answer
AH is the HCPCS Level II modifier "Clinical psychologist." Michigan's code sets apply it to licensed and temporary licensed psychologists, and its crosswalk maps licensed psychologists, limited licensed psychologists, temporary limited-licensed psychologists, and behavioral psychologists to AH. Some commercial plans, such as Anthem, list AH among modifiers that can affect reimbursement.
| Modifier | HCPCS descriptor | Type |
|---|---|---|
| AH | Clinical psychologist | Provider discipline |
How Michigan uses AH
Michigan lists AH as a provider credential modifier that affects the rate and notes it includes licensed and temporary licensed psychologists. Its code charts show psychologists with AH, HP, or HO depending on the code and the psychologist's degree:
| Michigan role | Modifier |
|---|---|
| Licensed psychologist, PhD | AH |
| Limited licensed psychologist, PhD | AH |
| Temporary limited-licensed psychologist | AH |
| Licensed or limited licensed psychologist, master's | HO |
| Behavioral health professional, PhD | HP |
Texas psychology billing
Texas requires a modifier on each detail for services by a psychologist, LPA, provisionally licensed psychologist, psychology intern, or post-doctoral fellow. Delegated services are billed under the supervising psychologist's NPI and paid at 70 percent of the psychologist rate for LPAs and PLPs and 50 percent for interns and fellows. A detail with no modifier, or two of them, denies.
Why AH claims deny
- Discipline mismatch. AH billed for a non-psychologist, or a master's-level psychologist where the payer expects HO.
- Expected education modifier instead. The code chart calls for HP, not AH, or both.
- AH and AJ swapped. AH is clinical psychologist; AJ is clinical social worker. Some online guides reverse them.
